  School Meals

Due to rising food costs school dinners will be £1.80 per day (£9 per week) with effect from Monday 9th September, this will bring us in line with other schools.  Please pay for school meals in advance, on a Monday. Thank You.

Homework

We are working on a project with the literacy team within the local authority to encourage speaking and listening as a tool for improving reading and writing. We see this as a vital skill, if children are to read fluently and write effectively they need to be confident with language, we already have a number of initiatives in place to support children’s communication but this project will give an extra boost. We will need your help with this… every two weeks as part of the homework set by your child’s teacher, they will be given ‘speaking and listening’ homework, as a build up to a later writing activity in school. Obviously the children cannot bring proof that they have completed this homework, but we do ask for your support to ensure you work with your child on this form of homework as it will help their self confidence when they get to the writing stage in school the following week.

Start and end of the day

We are now opening the school gates at 8.45am to avoid congestion outside the school gates and outside the Infant entrance.

Can I please remind parents that we would prefer junior children to bring themselves into school. If parents bring their children as far as the infant entrance/playground and then encourage them to go the rest of the way themselves this will help them become more independent. If any parent has a concern that cannot wait until the end of the school day when teachers have more time to speak to you, then please feel free to go to your child’s class but try to be as brief as possible so that the start of the day is not disrupted for the whole class. If it is message that can be passed to the teacher then please go to the school office, rather than disturb the class at the start of the day.

At the end of the day all infant children wait with the teacher until a parent arrives to collect them, juniors are free to leave by themselves and meet parents at an arranged meeting place near the infant entrance or may go home by themselves if this acceptable to you.

  Funding for reading

We are very lucky to be one of the 5 schools within the local authority that have received government funding for a national reading project for the next 3 years. East Riding  authority are using this money to carry out a ‘reading recovery’ project which will give intensive one to one reading support to a group of Year One or Two children. Mrs Massey will be teaching this programme to the children and if, after initial assessments, we believe your child would benefit from this we will let you know. Again this should help our younger children make a flying start to their education.

Curriculum enhancement

We are keen to provide exciting experiences for the children as part of their learning and throughout the year we have local visits or visitors to school planned to support the children’s learning. Most classes will be taking part in a history based workshop this half term, when visiting professionals will work with the children on their history topic to help bring their learning alive. This will be funded by the school, as will many other experiences throughout the year. We also have a visiting theatre company coming to perform to the children later in the half term, but we will need to ask for a donation for this activity and hope parents will support us in providing extra learning experiences for the children.
